Introduction

The association (Berekum for progress) exists to see the entire development of the whole Berekum municipality. The municipality consists of the Berekum Township and its environs.

The association emanated as a result of Berekum lately lagging its sister municipalities and districts that previously trailed behind Berekum, in terms of progress and development. This fact raised concerns as to why this should happen to a community that was once envied by all and sundry across Ghana.

Membership of the association is open to all well-wishers of Berekum. This means, not only citizens of Berekum traditional area but all well meaning citizens the globe who wish to see Berekum progress to a standard level and reclaim the position it once held as the “Golden city of Ghana.”

Activities

The first and prime concern of the association is to see to the end of the 10year long chieftaincy dispute surrounding the installation of the next paramount chief to succeed the late Nana Yiadom Boakye Owusu II who died in 1999.

It is the observation of the association that the slow pace or nonexistent development and progress of Berekum is a direct effect of the non-existent traditional leadership in the traditional area.

Measures were therefore put in place to create that awareness amongst the Berekm People and request both side of the divide in the chieftaincy dispute to bury their differences and come together to get a paramount chief for the area that shall be supported by all.

This was in a form of a peaceful demonstration dubbed “we no go sit down” that took place on the 2nd day of January 2012. The demonstration attracted people from all walks of life in the municipality; the aged, the old, the youth, the physically challenged.

People from both sides of the aforementioned divide also took part in the peaceful demonstration.
