Sunyani East Constituency Delegates Renew Endorsement for Incumbent NPP MP ahead of 2024 Elections

Over the weekend, delegates from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Sunyani East Constituency once again gave their backing to Mr. Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh (on the left), the incumbent Member of Parliament, as their candidate for the 2024 parliamentary election.

Mr. Ameyaw-Cheremeh, who serves as the Board Chairman of the Bui Power Authority, securing his fifth term in Parliament if successful in the upcoming elections. Despite initial challenges preventing the Sunyani East constituency from participating in the NPP’s parliamentary primaries held on January 27, the national leadership of the party addressed these issues, rescheduling the primary for March 9.

In a closely contested election supervised by the Electoral Commission (EC) at the Catholic Pastoral Centre in Sunyani, Mr. Ameyaw-Cheremeh garnered 460 out of 799 valid votes cast, defeating his sole opponent, Ambassador George Kumi, a former envoy. The atmosphere in Sunyani following the announcement was one of jubilation, with hundreds of delegates and supporters taking to the streets, clad in party attire.

Several delegates interviewed expressed their belief that the incumbent MP had made significant contributions deserving of their endorsement for the 2024 parliamentary elections. Mr. Abubakar Yakubu, the Sunyani East Communications Officer of the NPP, praised the delegates for their political maturity and civility during the polls. He also commended the police for their professionalism in maintaining law and order throughout the process.
