Berekum Holy Family Hospital Provides Free Surgeries with Netherland Partners, Surgery Festival 2021

Since its establishment in 1948, Holy Family Hospital, Berekum (the first mission hospital in the then Bono Ahafo Region) has provided healthcare to the residents of Berekum and beyond.

The number of persons in need of healthcare is steadily increasing as the catchment area expands. With the rise in the complexity of ailments that clients present with, it is more important than ever to offer them the specialized treatment they require. Some of these specialist services are only available at tertiary institutions, and patients may be unable to afford them.

As its goal to provide and sustain good quality health care for the poor, neglected and marginalized in society, the Holy Family Hospital with its partner, Stitching Berekum, a Dutch organization that has collaborated and supported The Hospital in providing high-quality health care, will provide free surgeries to patients in its catchment area form the 3rd of December to the 17th of December, 2021, dubbed SurgeryFest '21

Screening services commenced at the OPD on Monday, 22nd November and will end on Thursday, 16th of December, 2021

The specialities include Paediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Urology, Gynaecology, General Surgery, ENT and Dental. The conditions to be operated upon include but are not limited to Imperforate Anus, Hirschsprung's Diseases, Conjoined Toes and Fingers, Prostate Enlargement, Fibroid, Hernia, Hydrocele, Lipoma, Ganglion, Goitre, Tonsil Enlargement. There will also be free specialist consultations.

There are about 11 local surgeons involved and about 3 from the Netherlands.

The program is completely free. The specialist coming from the tertiary hospitals will not charge for their service to the patient, no hidden top-ups to be paid. However, Patients will have to present a valid NHIS card.

The general public is encouraged to take advantage of this Surgery Festival since these kinds of services are only mostly available in tertiary hospitals where patients may be obliged to wait in long queues to see a doctor. They sometimes have to spend the night at the hospital to get their hospital folders early. Mostly if they are ultimately scheduled for surgery, it will take many months or even a year to get the procedure done. This unintended delay could affect the outcome of surgery and quality of life. It could also be a huge financial burden on the family.
