The Berekum Cultural Centre, once a vibrant hub for indigenous gatherings and cultural displays, has experienced a gradual decline over the years, raising concerns among residents.
Initial plans to convert the building into a high court were halted due to its proximity to a nearby school. However, new life is being breathed into the structure as part of a revitalization initiative supported by the World Bank under the Secondary City Project.
In an exclusive interview with Berekumcity.com, Ing. Samuel Adu Boateng, the municipal engineer of Berekum East, shared detailed plans to transform the aging facility into a two-story multipurpose complex. The remodel will include a conference hall, offices, and retail spaces, creating a dynamic venue for cultural, business, and social gatherings. The Berekum East Municipal Assembly’s qualification in the Ghana Secondary City Support Program’s (GSCSP) 4th and 5th slots has been instrumental in facilitating this project, alongside other municipal enhancements. Previously, the GSCSP funded the successful transformation of the Thursday Market into a landmark structure, demonstrating its commitment to revitalizing Berekum East.
The sod-cutting ceremony for the Cultural Centre’s redevelopment took place on May 21, 2024, marking the official start of construction. The project is progressing steadily and is scheduled for completion by the end of the year.
