Berekum Chieftaincy Case Adjourned Prematurely

In the first sitting of the panel on the Berekum chieftaincy case, early this month, the chairman,  Nana Agyewodin Adu Gyamfi Ampem, the Omanhene of Acherensua Traditional area, adjourned the case to the 25th and 26th of this month. This move was highly praised because all the parties seemed to show a certain level of commitment in expediting the case, which has left the people of Berekum without a chief for over 13 years.

On Thursday, April 25, 2013, the panel sat and the counsel for the respondents presented what they say is their last, but one witness. A linguist of Asantehene was in the witness box to present his evidence concerning the royal gates in Berekum. After his evidence, the counsel for the petitioners started his cross examination. He indicated that he has another schedule the following day so he wouldn’t be able to make it, thus wished to make a lot out of the day. Unfortunately, the counsel for the respondent indicated that he had another scheduled at the Sunyani Polytechnic so he could not continue.

The chairman of the panel had to reluctantly adjourn the case to the 14th and 15th of May, this year. The chairman expressed his displeasure since he had to flown from Accra that morning and was scheduled to return the next day to continue his business.

The counsel for the petitioners will continue his cross examination on the next sitting.
