Kumasi Wesley Girls Closed Down

Education Authorities in the Ashanti Regional capital Kumasi have temporarily closed down the Wesley Girls High School following disturbances by the students.

The students demonstrated on the night of Thursday June 16 over allegations that their male teachers were making sexual advances at the

Hawa Iddrisu, a Correspondent of our partner station K-FM who visited the school, confirmed the closure to Citi News.

According to her, the school was scheduled to go for a mid-term break on June 30, but the Metropolitan Directorate of Education has asked the students to go home until further notice following the demonstration. She said the students among other things, alleged that the male teachers were pestering them with sexual demands in exchange for high examination marks, and constantly hurl insults at them and their parents at the least opportunity.

The students said whiles having supper on Thursday night, they were approached by some teachers who challenged them to name any teacher who had demanded sexual favours from them. When no response was forthcoming, the teachers again hurled insults at them and their parents.

They said this angered them hence the demonstration against the teachers.

They ended up rejecting the evening meal, throwing them on the floor, and scattered chairs and tables in the dining hall.

They also claimed to have vandalized the school’s bus, but that was denied by the school’s Assistant Headmistress who said the Bus had been driven to a nearby Police station because they had sensed danger following the student’s outrage.

She however revealed that one of the teachers had his salon car damaged by the angry female students.

The school’s Headmistress has meanwhile denied the students’ claims, saying the demonstration was sparked by a misunderstanding between the teachers and the students.
