Berekum Municipal Assembly Bans Pragyia in The Central Business District

The passenger tricycles popularly known as Pragyia has come to serve the population by providing affordable transportation and a source of income to many young folks, and indeed some old folks.

As much as it has brought significant economic benefits to the people of Berekum, it's beginning to be a nuisance, especially in the central business district.

Due to the high numbers of the tricycles, they tend to cause high levels of traffic around the main station, the old small and main roundabouts.

There have been several calls to ban their operations, but the concern has been the deprivement of thousands of livelihoods of their daily bread.

In a broad consultation process led by the Presiding Member (PM) of Berekum East Municipal Assembly, Hon Rev. Joseph Baffour Awuah, who doubles as the Dean of PMs in the Bono Region has resulted in the decision to restrict the operations of Pragyia from the Central Business District of Berekum. The decision was taken on Thursday, the 3rd of June 2021 in a regular sitting of the general assembly.

The tricycles are henceforth to be operational exclusive of the main roundabout to the old small roundabout street, the Omanhene street and streets Infront of banks, to help ease traffic congestion.

The decision has been endorsed by the Berekum traditional council and has been communicated to the Pragyia riders association.

It's anticipated that the decision will be taken in good faith by the various stakeholders to preserve the jobs of the many riders who make a livelihood from Pragyia and also help reduce traffic in the central business district.
