Both Berekum East and West District Assemblies Reach Deadlock in Choosing a Presiding Member

bkeastDistrict, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies were dissolved in the last quarter of 2019 after the elapse of the four-year term mandate of the various assembly members to pave way for the election of new members into the assemblies in Ghana.

Berekum East
Berekum East Municipal Assembly inaugurated 38 assembly members and conducted the election for a presiding member to lead the assembly. The contest was between Hon Joseph Baffour Awuah and Hon Hajia Fati.

After voting, Hon Joseph Baffour Awuah attained twenty-six (26) votes with Hon Hajia Fati securing twelve (12) votes. To be elected, a candidate needs to attain at least two-thirds majority of the (40) forty members present, including the MCE and MP, which in this case is 27 votes, but none of the candidates was able to attain that, thus there was a re-run.

In the re-run, Hon Joseph Baffour Awuah got twenty-five (25) votes and Hon Hajia Fati received thirteen (13) votes, thus none was able to get the required majority.

Hon Kwabena Twum Nuamah, MP, told the aspirants to go and do their homework well before the next voting date which will take place in the next ten (10) days from the date of the first voting.

Berekum West
bkwestThe Berekum West District Assembly inaugurated 19 elected assembly members and 9 government appointees into the assembly.

The Deputy Minister of Bono region who also doubles as an MP for Jaman North constituency, Hon Siaka Stevens advised the assembly members to work diligently to attain development of the district.

Osabarima Kusi Yeboah, Nifahene of the Berekum Traditional council who stood in for Berekumanhene, Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo II, encouraged the new members inducted into the assembly to live in harmony to bring development to the district.

The assembly conducted the election to elect it's Presiding Member who is supposed to attain at least 20 votes of thirty (30) assembly members including the DCE and MP. The Contestants were Hon Atta Jacob and Hon Oliveris Nketia Yeboah.

After the first round of voting, both had 14 votes, thus a second round was required. Hon Atta Jacob had 15 votes and Hon Oliveris Nketiah Yeboah got 12 votes after the second round, depriving the assembly of a presiding member for now. The election will be conducted again in the next 10 days to help break the deadlock.
