Fear has been put into the people who intend not to work but to steal for survival by a mob action against two of their likes in Biadan a suburb of Berekum in the Brong Ahafo for allegedly stealing digital decoders on Monday 20th June, 2016.
The two identified as Kwame Yeboah a.k.a Kwame Apontsey and Berekum Samini managed to enter a house with the deceiving word of thirst. They then sent a nine-year old boy who was alone at home to buy them sachet water. Upon returning, he met their absence only to find out that one of the guys is returning from his father's room with their decoder. He shouted for help - thief! thief! Neighbours around helped and got them arrested.
The mob mercilessly subjected them into severe beatings without taking them to the police station which led to the death of one at the spot and the other died later after being hospitalized at Berekum Holy Family Hospital. Their corpses are at the hospital's mortuary. The residents are of the belief that the police won't act accordingly when they hand over the suspects to the police.
Confirming the news to Berekumcity.com, DSP Asare Bediako the municipal police commander said they had a late call from the assemblyman of the area about the mob action. He said investigation is ongoing but none of the persons involved in the mob action is arrested. DSP Bediako debunked the claims by the residents over their failure to prosecute suspects. He reiterated that complaints fail to reappear before the station and court to serve as witness to give evidence about the cases they report. As the 1992 constitution chapter 5, article 15, section 2, states “No person shall whether or not he is arrested, restricted or retained be subjected to a torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment by any other condition that detracts or is likely to detract from his dignity and worth as a human being." DSP Bediako pleaded with the citizenry to desist from instant justice because it is illegal and can impede the due course of investigation because the suspects can serve as a pool of information to help arrest their accomplices.
