Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has praised his side's performance after his late penalty which defeated Serbia 1-0 this afternoon in Pretoria.
Raddy Antic's side had struggled to contain Ghana's dominance in midfield and their task was made even more perilous when defender Aleksandar Lukovic was red carded for his second bookable offence in the 74th minute.
Zdravko Kuzmanovic's handball offence inside the Serbian penalty area with just seven minutes remaining handed the Black Stars the opportunity to seal all three points from the penalty spot, which Gyan duly converted to make Ghana the first African team to have a win in this world cup.
Andre Ayew stated that the win was not just for Ghana, but for Africa .
He added: "It was a difficult game but we really wanted to win and we made the coach happy. This is just the beginning and we are going to build from this.
"There is good team spirit with the senior players helping the younger players. South Africa is behind us and South Africa is behind all African teams. We will do our best to make South Africa and Africa proud."
