Berekum Chelsea have crashed out of this season’s Caf Champions League following TP Mazembe’s win over Al Ahly on Sunday.
The dethroned Ghana Premier League champions failed to make their game against Zamalek count a day earlier after drawing 1-1 in Cairo.
Mazembe’s win in Lubumbashi takes them to 10 points and safety even if they lose to Chelsea as the Ghanaian club currently in third place have six points.
This means a win over Mazembe in the final group game will take Chelsea to nine points which is not enough to see them through to the last eight.
It is a disappointing way for Chelsea to bow out following their explosive start in just their maiden campaign in the flagship continental competition.
The Blues started off with a hard fought 3-2 win over Zamalek at the Accra Sports Stadium and achieved an even more impressive 2-2 draw away to TP Mazembe in their second game.
It is however the games against Al Ahly that proved their Achilles heel as they were unable to beat the Egyptian giants over two legs – suffering a resounding 4-1 defeat in the first encounter in Cairo.
The Berekum lads failed to get the much needed win against Zamalek – handing the initiative to Mazembe who made no mistake in ceasing the opportunity by getting the win against Ahly on Sunday.
