Berekum Chelsea History

Brief History

The club was started as Semereka FC in 2000 by Mr. Obed Nana Nketiah and Mr. Emmanuel Kyeremeh, both from Berekum.

The club’s name was changed in 2004 to Chelsea due to the then 'hype' of Chelsea Fc (London) during Michael’s Essien’s transfer form Lyon to Chelsea.

Chelsea was move from Berekum to Bechem because there were a number of traditional clubs competing with them at that time.

Bechem was chosen because, the club founders had cordial relationships with a lot of people from that community; the only competitor was Bechem FC there.

The main objective for the establishment of the club was to create jobs for the young footballers of Berekum and to promote football in the Brong  Ahafo Region .

The team started with about 75% of indigenes from Berekum. Unfortunately as the time the club qualified for the premiership, only one player was left from the original team. His name was Jackson Owusu, and he’s the longest served player in the club

The club played at Ohene Djan Sports Stadium, the first League match on 24 November 2008 won the game with 3-2 victory against Liberty Professionals F.C.

The team came back to Berekum on the 17th of February 2010 for good because most of the fans traveled to Sunyani (former home grounds) and it created a number of challenges for them. Since the returned to Berekum, Chelsea has won the both premier matches played with Wa All stars and New Edubiase by 2-0. Their first match was with Berekum Arsenals, which was a friendly encounter. They won by 3 goals to 1.

The club started the 2010–11 Ghanaian Premier League season very strong and then eventually went on to win the title for the first time

The club has started works on its Stadium at Benkasa whch is hoped to be completed soon.
