The new assembly which was inaugurated last week for a four-year term in Berekum East failed to elect a Presiding Member to lead the assembly. The elected Presiding Member is required to get a two-thirds majority of Assembly members present. The contest was between Hon Joseph Baffour Awua and Hon Hajia Fati, but after the voting, none of them was able to get the minimum required number of 27 votes out of the 40 members.
The election was postponed after two attempts which ended in a deadlock. In its sitting, today 30th of January 2020, Berekum East was finally able to elect a new Presiding Member (PM), who indeed is the immediate past PM. The assembly members present were 38 and he managed to secure 37 votes. His opponent, Hon Hajia Fati declared her support for him and stepped aside.
Hon Baffour thank the assembly members for the support and promised to work diligently to realise the vision of the assembly and to bring the right development to Berekum.
He hinted that some of the works such as the timber market which is scheduled to be done in Amoagose will be facilitated to completion in the shortest possible time.
However Berekum West was not able to elect its PM after another two attempts, thus the election is scheduled for another date for the third time.
