One of the boggling questions which is normally asked by a lot is, how come, with the kind of professional teachers basic public schools have, they are generally over run by private school when it comes to the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).
This was a key question which came up when Koraso R/C, JHS scored 0% in the 2009/10 BECE. A native of the area and an assembly member, Hon. Clement Amofa-Boakye took it upon himself to find solutions to this problem. After several consultations with stakeholders, it was established that the poor infrastructure, particularly dusty floors among other factors played a key role to the failure of the pupils.
The apathy of the pupils was very high because they wore white uniforms in dusty classrooms. Pupils at that level are mostly adolescents who want to appear ‘neat’ to others, and hence most of them refused to go to school only to be referred to as ‘dirty’, whilst their peers in other schools were praised for being ‘neat’.
Hon. Clement Amofa-Boakye therefore mobilized resources to renovate the classroom used by the JHS 3 pupils to serve as a motivator for attendance, and promised the School of renovating the remaining two, should the performance improve to 75%.
The latest BECE results showed that the School scored 100% and upon seeing this vast improvement, he decided to fulfill his 3 year old promise, and hence the renovation.
