The youth of Berekum, led by Berekum For Progress, held a very peaceful demonstration on Monday 2nd of January, 2011 to state their displeasure on the chieftaincy disputes in Berekum.
The youth held various placards some of which read, “We Want Peace, We Need Unity, Berekum Is Retrogressing, We Need Development, Nananom Unite, Nananom Compromise For Development” and many more.
The Mass started from the Jamdede school park through the principal streets of Berekum to Kato, then from Kato to the Omanhene’s park where the crowd were addressed. {jcomments on}
A summary of the petition being presented to the Brong Ahafo Regional house of chiefs was given to the demonstrators.
These are some of the excepts of the petition addressed to the President of the Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs;
“We (the youth of Berekum Traditional Area) shall be grateful to your good office; if you could speed up the process of resolving the Berekum Chieftaincy dispute, to enable us have a substantive Paramount Chief who shall be duly recognized by all.
This petition has become necessary as result of the disunity, mistrust and some amount of tension between Nananom, which is extending to the entire citizenry of Berekum.”
The petition goes on to elaborate some of the effects this dispute has brought on the good people of Berekum and especially the youth.
A suggestion was also made to the House of chiefs to help aid the resolution process.
Different petitions would also be sent to the two factions in dispute over who should be chief in Berekum, that is the ‘Queen’s faction’ and ‘Kontihene’s faction’.
