The youth in Berekum have scheduled tomorrow 2nd January, 2012, to have a demonstration to state their displeasure on the way the chieftaincy dispute is being handled.
The organisers, who have coined the named BEREKUM FOR PROGRESS, intend to present a petition to the Brong Ahafo Regional House of chiefs (since the case is currently pending there) and the Ministry Of Chieftaincy And Culture. {jcomments on}
Berekum has been in dispute on who should be the paramount chief of Berekum, about 11 years now. The dispute is between the ‘Queen’s faction’ and the ‘Kontihene faction’.
The Queen’s faction accepts the current ‘chief’, Daasebre Amakona Diawuo II, but the Kontihene’s faction says that he did not go through the right customary rite, thus they cannot accept him.
These wrangling have had adverse effect on the Berekum Township. Berekum hasn’t seen any major development for a very long time, and all of this is attributed to the dispute.
The youth of Berekum are inviting anybody who loves and cares about Berekum to participate in this peaceful demonstration to establish their displeasure.
