Youth In Berekum, Urged to Venture Into Agriculture

The youth in the Berekum Municipality has been encouraged to venture into farming, since it is a very profitable business.

The MCE of Berekum Hon. Lord Oppong Stephen, speaking at just ended 27th Farmers’ Day celebration on Friday 2nd of December, 2011, in the Berekum Municipality at Nkyekyemam, he said, “I have personally instituted an award for four who singled themselves out irrespective of their academic qualifications to undertake large scale farming in the municipality that has encouraged a lot more youth to see farming as important job, thereby changing their perception for better”.

The awardees who received 2 Knapsack Sprayers each were

Dennis Ofori Armah of Berekum (Crops)

Hon. Clement Amofa of Koraso (vegetables)

Mr Kofi Tuah of Berekum (Poultry)

Mr Justice John Ocloo of Berekum (Bee Keeping).

Hon. Clement Amofa, who was the municipal best pepper farmer last year, has persistently encouraged the youth to take farming seriously, since he believes it would go a long way in reducing the employment deficit in the country.

He had instituted the Youth in Agriculture Program in his community-Koraso, which is helping most of the youth who are interested in Agric, to get the basic support and equipment to start their Agric Businesses.

In a short address by the Municipal best Farmer, Mad. Kate Febiri from Jinijini, she advised her fellow farmers to desist from bush fires.

She further appealed to the government to rehabilitate various roads which link their farms and rehabilitate old and existing MOFA staff quarters to help improve productivity.
