Ghanaians Must Brace For Fallouts From Mills' Gay Aid Defiance

The Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. Gabriel Charles Palmer Buckle, has admonished Ghanaians to be bold and take responsibility for the consequences that may result from President Mills’ defiant response to Britain on the issue of homosexuality.

President John Evans Atta Mills, on Wednesday, called the bluff of UK Prime Minister David Cameron over his threat to cut aid to countries with anti-gay legislation.

Ghana’s laws criminalise unnatural carnal knowledge and the society frowns heavily on the practice.

According to President Mills, Ghana will not legalise homosexuality on the say-so of Mr Cameron, especially when such a move has the potential to destroy the social fabric of society.

However Archbishop Buckle believes that such tough talk from the President may incur serious economic consequences and urges the citizenry to be ready to sacrifice economically in order to keep their dignity as a society and protect the sovereignty of the nation.

Government, he said, seeks foreign aid because it cannot meet all the demands of the people on its own. Archbishop Palmer Buckle, therefore, advised that Ghanaians prepare to live without aid from the UK should the country’s Prime Minister Carry out his threat to cut the annual budgetary support to the country.

Most Rev. Palmer Buckle was speaking in an interview on Peace FM Thursday.

Commenting on arguments that homosexuals have rights to choose their sexual preference, Archbishop Buckle stated that even sexual perverts as well as other criminals have rights but that those rights are curtailed for the good of the larger society.

He noted that it was the duty of society to point out to homosexuals that they have a wrong sexual preference and help them overcome the challenge.
