Berekum College of education, formerly Berekum Teachers’ training college, held the 2nd congregation of the college on Saturday 29th may, this year at the college campus.
The congregation was done for both ‘sandwich’ and regular students who passed out in 2009.
Dignitaries present were; Nana Dr. Amankonah Diawuo (Omanhene of Berekum)-Guest of Honor,
Mr. Paul Effah (Executive secretary National council for tertiary students) - Guest speaker,
Prof. F.K. Amedahe (Dean, Faculty of education-UCC) - Special Guest.
The past SRC president, Master Lawrence Oppong noted in his speech that the 2009 regular batch had left a good legacy for others to emulate. He mentioned good academic performance, sports and the modernization of the school’s entrance.
Before the Principal, Mr. Yaw Adjei Sarkodie’s speech, a minute of silence was observed for Mrs. Salifu Ramatu, the only student who obtained 2nd class, upper division but passed away before the congregation.
In the Principal’s address, he highlighted that; the college cannot produce effective, dedicated and committed teachers without reference to discipline on the parts of tutors and students. “I’m of the opinion that both staff and students will continue to observe the code of conduct in place, he said. “The recent misunderstanding among students about discipline in tertiary institutions has no place here, ‘tertiary’ does not mean lawlessness”, he emphasized.
Mr. Paul Effah, the guest speaker said in his speech that, a number of steps are being taken by the national council for tertiary education to upgrade staff standards. A committee has been set up to screen all staff to identify their capabilities and potential, he revealed.
He noted that a memorandum of understanding will be signed with some universities to offer post graduate programs for selected staff in selected disciplines to enable the staff concerned to complete their masters programs within the next two years. He concluded by praising staff who are making efforts to enroll for various master’s program.
The graduates were 312 regular students and 457 ‘sandwich’ students.
