Team Brand Berekum, a movement to promote and portray Berekum to the world, has collaborated with the Berekum Traditional council to honour the administrator of Holy Family hospital, Berekum, for her enormous contribution towards the development of the hospital and Berekum at large.
The initiative started last year with Prof Obeng Ofori, the Global Financial Chairman of the Berekumman Citizens’ Association and the Vice Chancellor of the Catholic University of Ghana receiving the first award at last year’s Kwafie festival in Berekum.
Rev. Sr Reena received the award during this year’s Kwafie festival of Berekum held by Daasebere Amankona Diawuo II, the Paramount Chief of Berekum traditional area at the forecourt of his palace on Friday, 2nd of December, 2022.
This year’s recipient, Rev. Sr. Reena V. John was honoured for her achievements in the past six years she has been the administrator of the Holy Family Hospital, Berekum.
She is a member of the congregation of the Medical Mission Sisters of St. Joseph, the founders of the Hospital. she joined the community at Kothamangalam, India where she had her first profession in 1995 and her final profession in 2000. She was among the best candidates in her noble profession at those times to gain admission into the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in 2000 where she graduated with a BSc. Pharmacy. Her quest for counselling also saw her obtaining a Diploma in Counselling Psychology and Formative Spirituality in 2002.
In 2009 she was appointed as the Pharmacist at the St. Mary’s Hospital, Drobo in the Jaman South District of Ghana. She also worked as the Superintendent Pharmacist at African Global Pharmacy Sunyani, a position she held till 2013.
Sr. Reena obtained her second degree in Hospital Administration in 2015. She was appointed as the Hospital Administrator of Holy Family Hospital, Berekum in May 2016. She has thus been promoted to Principal Administrator. She was also the Diocesan Health Services Director, at the Diocese of Sunyani from 2017 to 2020.
Under her leadership, the facility implemented the electronic folder system which was one of the pioneers in the country and has contributed to the reduction in waiting times for patients.
She also led the expansion of service delivery including specialities such as Obstetrician & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Surgery, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, and ENT among others. The Mother & Child Health(MCH) unit and Eye & ENT units have seen massive facelifts and the completion of a 100-bed capacity Maternity ward, Administration and OPD blocks. Berekum’s Holy Family Hospital is now a hospital of preference for the training of Doctors, Nurses and other health professionals.
The Berekum Municipality can boast of vital diagnostic and investigative services such as Digital X-Ray machines, Endoscopy, Dialyses, and CT-Scan under her leadership.
Her tenure has also seen the upgrade of the hospital to a secondary-level status to be at par with a Regional Hospital
She’s also highly praised for her love for humanity as she supports unknown people with serious ill health and often offers a flexible payment plan for default customers.
She is not a native of Berekum yet she has distinguished herself as a true daughter of the Land.
