Twafourhene of Berekum Traditional Area Welcomes Newly Created Berekum West District But Raises Concerns About The Office Location

Nana AmoThe Twafourhene of the Berekum traditional council Nana Amo Tima Gyan has expressed his enthusiasm for the creation of the newly Berekum West district to improve rapid development in the area.

Nana Amo, who resides at Domfete, a suburb of Berekum, praised the authorities who championed the motion for the creation of the new districts in the country, especially the local government and rural development minister Hon Hajia Alima Mahama, for adding Berekum West.

Nana Amo disclosed that, developmental projects are largely seen in the Eastern part as compared to the Western part of the municipality and thus it is a great relief that the West is also going to have its own district to accelerate development.

He told the media that, Nananom of Berekum West are very happy that, the inauguration is scheduled to take place on the 15 March 2018 at Jinijini. He emphasized that, there is no argument about the district capital, Jinijini, which has all the necessary requisite to be district capital, but, the concern he has, is why the district office is going to be stationed at the member of parliament for Berekum West, Hon Kwaku Agyenim Boateng’s private residence.

Nana Amo pointed out that, the news for the location of the district assembly’s office was broken to them on 4th of March by the MP at an emergency meeting, without consultations and knowledge of Nananom. One of the key concerns, however, is, the terms and conditions on which the office is being offered are unknown, thus, leaving much to be desired, he conceded.

Nana Amo however, suggested a number of locations, which he believes, could have been a suitable location of the office. These include Kasap Ltd quarters, Cap Rtd Nkrabea Effah Darteh vocational school buildings, Jinijini post office, Jinijini community Center among others.

He acknowledged that development in Berekum has stalled for over 17 years due to chieftaincy disputes. Nana was, however optimistic that Berekum will start developing again following the Supreme court ruling on the dispute on the 14th of December 2017, allowing Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo II to function as the legitimate Chief of Berekum.

He, however, cautions anybody who will try to jeopardize the efforts in achieving the status of the once Golden City back, to refrain, else Nananom will march with such people ‘boot for boot’. “Both East and West have capable men in Government, so what will prevent us from attaining our developmental status if these leaders are fair and not egocentric”, he added.

He finally urged Chiefs and Elders to be proactive in all their decision-making concerning developmental projects in Berekum.

He pledged his support to help achieve the aim, ambition and expectations that the new district promises.

“Berekum will be called "GOLDEN CITY" again”, he ended.
