Historical Background
Demonstration Junior High School, which is now Yiadom Boakye Demonstration, is the one of the best among all the public schools in Berekum. It was originally established in the late 19th century (1978). In 1974, a committee was set up under the auspices of the then Government, to investigate the effects and significance of technical vocational education on the lives Ghanaians. In Berekum municipality, Demonstration Junior High School which was then a basic school was selected, aftermath the committees’ investigation to be established as Technical vocational institute.
Demonstration Junior High School in its capacity as a vocational institute had trained and established a lot of people in carpentry, block laying, metal work (weldering), basketry etc. In 1987 Demonstration Junior High School changed its status as technical institute and became the only junior high school in the municipality as a result of the new educational reform by the PNDC government. Following the rapid increase in students’ populace, the school’s administration was compelled to divide the classes into A, B, C and D under one headmaster. The tremendous success of Demonstration Junior High was unabated and later became a bigger threat to most of the private schools in Berekum.
Despite its success over the years, Demonstration Junior High School faced technical and administrative challenges which accounted for the sudden change of name and partition into three different schools namely; Yiadom Boakye Demonstration A, B and C under different headmasters in the year 2010.
Reasons That Accounted For The Partition Of The School
- Massive population growth.
- Sudden fall of standard of education: In 2010, over 200 candidates were registered for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), out this only 84 candidates representing 40% passed and had admission to the senior high school. This sudden brutal failure and decline in academic performance agitated and prompted Ghana Education Service to intervene. GES set up a committee and the findings of the committee depicts that, the sudden failure was a result of;
- Lack of discipline in the school.
- Large growth of population in the school
- Inability of the administration to curb and instil discipline in the school.
In view of these reasons listed above, the school (demonstration junior high school) was divided into three schools under three different headmasters to rewind the excellent academic performance history of the school.
