The People With Disability (PWD)formerly known as the Ghana society of physically disabled in Berekum of the Bono region have cautioned the highways authority that if they don’t come to their aid, they will construct speed rumps on the Berekum -Sunyani road in front of their office to curb the spate of vehicles killing pedestrians within their office zone in Berekum.
Information gathered is that many people in have been killed or mutilated by speeding vehicles along that stretch
According to PWD, they have submitted several letters to Berekum Municipal Assembly since 2017, Bono highways authority and Berekum Traditional Council but to no avail. They have even demonstrated to show their displeasure to these aforementioned authorities but still, the menace persists.
In an exclusive interview with Berekumcity.com, the Berekum PWD secretary on 27th August 2019, Mr Kwei Nortey Belmano Nii said, soon they will construct speed rumps to their specification order help pedestrians cross the road safely if they do not hear from the highway authorities.
He said sometimes they feel neglected even though they all contribute to the Nation’s building.
They produced soap, “Ghana made sandals” and beads which help in the nation's building.
Thus they are pleading with Berekumman Citizens Association, NGOs and Individuals to come to their aid with funds to help construct the speed limit tables to help curb accidents to their members and other pedestrians who cross the road in front of their office.
The people of Domfete have also created very high rumps on their roads (which is part of the Berekum Drobo highway) which is causing great discomfort among motorist who use the road. Indeed a container fell off from a trailer of a truck in the night, which would have been a serious calamity if pedestrians and other road users were around.
The highways Authority maintenance manager of the Bono region Mr Abu Mohammed in an interview Berekumcity.com’s reporter Effah Kwaku Aborroway lamented how people build rumps on highways which he said is illegal if it’s without authorization from the Ghana Highway authority, such as the one on the Domfete road.
He noted that Domfete road, which is part of the Berekum -Drobo highway is still under construction by J.A Adom construction Limited and until they finish their work, Highways can't construct any speed rumps on that road.
Berekumcity. com investigations revealed that Regional Highways Authority is financially constrained in building more speed rumps in the region.
In an interview with the CEO of Master Class Construction Ltd, Misty Donkor who is physically challenged, he hinted to assist with the building of the ramp in front of PWD office. He said he would support the construction of speed limit tables in Berekum and he’s planning to help provide speed rumps on the Nyansa ye curve, Continental area, and to replace the unacceptable one at Domfete.
Master Class Construction limited has a track record in Berekum for the construction of Berekum Magazine road, Koraso township road, Hospital road, Biadan Koraa culvert, Amangoase bridge etc.
The most current construction work the company has done is the two-speed limit tables on the Berekum -Sunyani Road in front of All for Christ Secondary and Technical school which was financed by Apostle Joe Yankyira, the CEO of the School to help control road accidents that occur on Berekum-Sunyani highway.
Misty Donkor said he foresees Berekum becoming an accident-free zone if we can control over speeding in the township.
