The National Science and Maths Quiz have existed since 1993 and had seen several schools participate. It has become one of the most prestigious events on the academic calendar of almost all Senior High Schools in Ghana. The contest is so important to some schools and their alumni and that special endowment funds and resources including building facilities have been provided for the team to make the right impact. Alumni of various schools indeed use the number of victories they gain in the competition to hype themselves.
The contest has grown to a level where it has attracted several sponsorship packages and thus provide lucrative scholarships for the contestants and amazing prices for their schools. This year's winners (ST. Augustine’s College, Cape Coast) had a full scholarship to a tertiary institution of their choice and they were indeed taken to Dubai on a vacation after the contest.
Schools in Berekum have made appearances but have not been able to get very far. The 2019 edition saw Berekum Presec and Berekum Senor High School (BESS) making an appearance but not getting very far.
Mr Nelson Kyeremeh, an industrious son of Berekum and a BESSOSAN (Old student of Bess) made a cash donation of GH 1000.00 and assorted drinks to the team that represented BESS. The team subsequently requested items that will help and prepare them to a level where they can make positive impressions in the competition.
It's on this backdrop that Mr Nelson Kyeremeh on the 28th of September, 2019, donated a Projector and some specifically requested "National Science and Maths Quiz" materials such as books and previous contest video clips at a cost of GH1500.00.
He made the presentation to the Head Master of BESS, Mr Ebenezer Ayensu Kwagyire in the presence of the Assistant Headmistress Academic and Domestic in addition to some students. “This is in fulfilment to my earlier promise to help the team of students that represented BESS in this year's National Science and Maths Quiz when I visited them at Legon”, he said.
The headmaster thanked Mr Kyeremeh for his kind gesture and assured to him the team will put the materials to good use. He, however, asked for more support from various stakeholders.
